Countthehits.
9hits circled
in 100 sq ft
An adjuster judges a hail claim by chalking a 10 × 10 ft square on each slope and counting the hits inside it. We do that count first, photograph every circle and walk you through it before you file anything.
Each insurer sets its own threshold for how many hits mean a new roof. We show you the count; your policy decides the rest.
- 1Chalk a square on every slope
- 2Circle each hit and count
- 3Photos and count, sent to you
From hailstorm to check, square by square.
Five steps, in the order they really happen. The part most people never see is step 3: a stranger on your roof with a piece of chalk.
The storm passes
From the ground, photograph what you can see: dented gutters and downspouts, nicked AC fins, torn screens. Write down the date. Texas regulators say to file as soon as you can.
We count first, for free
A chalked 10 × 10 ft square on every slope, each hit circled and photographed. If the count is low, we tell you that too.
The adjuster counts
Your insurer sends an adjuster who chalks their own squares. We can meet them on the roof and point to every circle. They decide; we don’t negotiate.
Your policy decides
Each insurer sets its own number of hits per square. Eight is often quoted; it isn’t a rule. Replacement-cost policies usually pay in two checks.
The roof goes on
Tear-off, install, magnet sweep, final photos of every slope. We send your insurer the invoice and photos it asks for to release the rest.

Same roof. Same hits. Different answer.
Here is one roof with a test square on each slope. The hits don’t change; the number your insurer uses does. Pick a threshold to see which slopes meet it.
2 of 4 slopes meet 8 hits.
Whether that means two slopes or the whole roof is up to your policy and the adjuster, not the roofer.
Illustrative roof and counts. The storm in this example came from the west, so the west slope took the most.
Priced by the square.
A roofing square is 100 sq ft. So is an adjuster’s test square. We count in it, measure in it and price in it, so the numbers on your estimate line up with the ones on the claim.
Hail and wind inspection
Free
We chalk a 10 × 10 ft square on every slope, circle each hit, photograph it, and text you the count the same day. Nothing to sign at the door.
Help with the insurance claim
No charge
We meet your adjuster on the roof, show our squares and photos, and write the line-item estimate for the work. Your insurer makes the call.

Passed a 2 in. steel ball dropped 20 ft, twice on the same spot, with no crack on the back. Impact-resistant is not hail-proof, and we say so on the contract.

Repair when it’s a few blown-off shingles, one leak at a pipe or flashing, a roof under about 12 years old, or a hail count under your insurer’s number. Replace when the count passes the threshold on two or more slopes, the roof is past about 20 years, or shingles are curling, cracking or bare across whole slopes. A rule of thumb, not a diagnosis; the free count settles it.
Yes. You get the count and the photos whether or not you hire us, and there is nothing to sign while we’re on your driveway.
Either order works. Many people have a roofer count first so they know whether there is damage worth a claim. Whichever you do, don’t wait: the Texas Department of Insurance says to file as soon as you can, and your policy may set its own deadline.
No, and you should be wary of anyone who offers. Texas law makes it illegal to waive a homeowner’s deductible, and your insurer may ask for proof that you paid it.
No. Texas Insurance Code §4102.163 bars a contractor from acting as a public adjuster on a property where it may do the work. We show the adjuster our evidence and write the estimate; the claim stays between you and your insurer (or a licensed public adjuster you hire).
Under the UL 2218 test, a 2 in. steel ball is dropped 20 ft onto the same spot twice, and the back of the shingle must show no crack or tear. Texas insurers can give a premium credit for impact-rated roofs, and each company sets its own amount. Ask two things before you choose: how much the credit is, and whether it comes with an endorsement that excludes cosmetic hail damage.
With replacement-cost coverage, the first check is a partial payment and the rest follows once repairs start. If your roof is covered at actual cash value (some insurers switch older roofs to it at renewal), depreciation comes off the payment.
On shingles, usually not. Dented gutters, downspouts and AC fins are good clues to the size of the hail, but the count happens on the roof, inside the square.
Most single-story houses are torn off and dried in by the end of day one and finished on day two. Steep or cut-up roofs take longer; your written estimate says how long.
